CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia man has been sentenced to at most 30 years in prison involving the fatal shooting of his niece's boyfriend.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports 61-year-old Keith Wade Jones was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty last month to second-degree murder in the death of 34-year-old Joe Williams.

Williams and his girlfriend, Jones' niece Lisa Ratliff, had moved in with Jones four days before prosecutors say the Rand resident shot him during an argument on Sept. 29, Jones' birthday. Kanawha County public defender Ronni Sheets said Jones had been drinking excessively since that morning.

Sheets said Jones and Williams were drinking moonshine and rum, and Jones couldn't remember what Williams said to anger him. She asked the judge to consider Jones' age, poor health and minimal criminal history before sentencing.
